Scott Mills’ First Week on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show

Scott Mills kicked off his brand new era on BBC Radio 2 Breakfast with a week full of laughs, confessions, guest surprises, and a lot of love. Here’s what went down:

Monday 27 Jan – “Remind me never to do the breakfast show”

Scott’s big debut came with genuine emotion: “This might be the best day of my life… apart from getting married.” His first track was a “Greatest Showman-ed” remix of Robbie Williams’ Rock DJ, a nod to The One Show reveal.

He introduced his new team: Tina Daheley (legendary newsreader and closet trombone player) and Ellie Brennan (travel presenter, Oasis fan, and ex-ballet dancer). Listener icebreakers poured in — from deputy headteachers mistaken for Claudia Winkleman to bell ringers and Lego lovers.

One listener, Claire, started a new job the same day as Scott — and they agreed to check in throughout the week.

Quote of the day: “I have a capybara called Teddy, I know nothing about sport, and my favourite chocolate is fruit and nut.” – Scott

Tuesday 28 Jan – “Normalise the mug!”

Scott launched a campaign to normalise bringing a household mug out of the house instead of a flask. Listener verdict? Totally normal.

Tina’s bacon sandwich confession resurfaced: she uses mayonnaise, not ketchup — a choice that divided the audience.

Fitness guilt crept in: Tina did Reformer Pilates (“My glutes are on fire!”), Ellie got her steps in, and Scott opted for tacos with his mum.

Wednesday 29 Jan – “Ask Tina Anything” takes over

Tina’s earlier icebreakers turned into a full-on Q&A. Listeners fired off questions about her life, from favourite cheese to career regrets.

Key revelations: She used to wash Kylie Minogue’s hair as a junior stylist, once took a contestant from Space Cadets into hiding in the Maldives, and studied both law and computer science.

One listener, Joe (aged 8), called out Tina for her mayo-on-bacon habit, joking she should be arrested for it.

Thursday 30 Jan – “Hev is a legend”

Viral TikTok star Hev from Bluewater Primark was featured for her “unexpected legend in bagging area” videos. Scott played her audio and she responded on social: “Scott Mills? He’s very knowledgeable… he does Eurovision.”

Scott read out more listener love, including a nightly check-in voice note from Rylan: “Are you in bed, darling?”

He also opened up about losing weight after a high BMI reading before filming Race Across the World. His motivation? “Wedding and that.”

Friday 31 Jan – Ham-face pizza & Big Guest Friday

A listener sent in a pizza with Scott’s face recreated in ham and peppers. Chaos and laughter erupted. Tina and Ellie described it as “raw but a work of art”.

Craig David and Sophie Ellis-Bextor were the week’s first Big Guest Friday stars. Sophie hyped up her Friday Night Kitchen Disco, launching that evening.

Listener Joe returned to give his honest week-one review: he loved the spaghetti game, the choir, and Robbie Williams — but thought the quiz was far too easy. “Even my three-year-old brother could do it,” he said. He offered to write harder questions himself.

Meanwhile, Natalie Cassidy messaged Scott during the show with kind words — and minutes later, it broke that she was leaving EastEnders.

Quote of the day: “Stop worrying about going to the gym. Dry January is over. Let’s get on the cream cakes.” – Scott (via Cilla Black)

Themes of the Week

New beginnings: Not just for Scott, but for listeners too — it felt like a shared fresh start.

Relatable chaos: From raw ham on air to dog-in-the-bed confessions, it was messy in the best way.

Listener connection: Whether it was a teacher on day one or kids doing live reviews, Scott’s show felt like everyone’s show.

Big laughs, big heart: Pure Scott — radio that makes you grin before 7am.
