Isn’t it time the Big Weekend came to the East?

You know what really grinds my gears? How the Big Weekend over the last eleven years has failed to hit the Eastern region.

This map shows how Radio 1 has settled for many central locations since Radio 1’s Big Weekend begun.

It also has notably favoured sites closer to the existing mainstream festivals such as ReadingLeedsGlastonbury and V.

Wasn’t the Big Weekend’s mission statement to go to towns further away from those sort of events?

The East consistently misses out on events throughout Radio 1’s calendar of live events and the likes of Essex, Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridge and Northampton look set to miss out again this year.

Great Yarmouth and Hustanton were once the home to Radio 1’s summer events back in the 80s and 90s but ever since the station has distanced itself from us. Why is that?

Scott Mills announce this year’s venue for BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend on Wednesday morning from 6.30am.
